Downtime (San Diego Fires)

Apologies to those of you who were unable to connect to PatentReference over the past few days. Due to fires in our area we experienced a power loss after which our internet connection failed to reset properly. In the interest of health and safety, I made the call not to return to our building to fix the issue until the fire risk became manageable. Steps will be taken to avoid a similar situation from recurring in the future.

Secondary (Backup) Network Installed

We've been working through the night upgrading the majority of our website systems with extra gigabit network adaptors and a new second internet router for increased performance and reliability. Apologies to any late night inventors and attorneys who could not get through to the site during the operation. Note that the remaining systems that we did not reach will be upgraded tonight, and 10-30 additional minutes of downtime is expected for PatentReference.

There is a good reason for our performing this upgrade at this time. The more observant amongst you may have noticed that PatentReference has not been upgraded with new features with the same frequency as usual. Rest assured we are working hard on a big surprise for everyone which we will (hopefully) release within the next few weeks! Anyone who just cannot wait that long may send us a request to participate in a preliminary beta test here.

Systems Upgrade & New Content

PatentReference was offline for a few hours today as we performed an essential database upgrade. Apologies to anyone effected.

The good news is that we have once again added more content to the PatentReference HomePage! Rolf Claessen from IPNewsFlash has provided us with his Patent Offices Notices, and we now also carry the Usenet newsgroups "alt.inventors".

1-Step Sign-up Process not so 1-Step?

I would like to apologize to those of you who created an account recently only to find that you were asked to fill out the same user information twice on different sign-up screens. This is not the way it was intended to function and it should now be fixed to only request the information one time.

As a side-effect, if you chose different user names or cancelled out of the second sign-up page you may not be able to visit the community pages (forums, blogs, etc.) while logged in. If the site hangs when you attempt to go to the forums, please drop us a message on our feedback page and we will take care of it as quickly as possible. This should not be an issue for the majority of users (if any) as we have taken every effort to fix the problem for effected accounts already.

Again, I apologize for any inconvenience. We are only a small development team here at PatentReference with limited resources to run this free site. While we make every effort to maintain a quality site, inevitably problems such as this will arise. Because we are unable to constantly test the site for errors and still develop new and useful features for the site, we rely on our user community to inform us of anything we miss. Please take the time to send us feedback if you find anything amiss. It will get our prompt attention.

Caselaw Section

Once again we've added more content to the homepage! This time its a content window with the latest caselaw, generously provided by Rolf Claessen from his website IpNewsflash!

In addition, Rolf has generously agreed to provide us with Updates from the Patent Offices, and Patent Family search. More on this to follow shortly.

New Chat Box

We've added a new chat content window to the homepage which will allow everyone to leave comments to us and each other. In theory you could also carry on a conversation about patents as it does update in near realtime.
